Trailhead: Enchanted Rock SNA — main parking
~1.5h NW of Austin: Hwy 290 → Fredericksburg → RR 965 north (18 mi)
⛽ Last services: Fredericksburg (gas, groceries, food) ~18 mi / 25 min south.
📶 Cell signal: Weak to none on the dome; reception back in Fredericksburg.
🥾 Approach · descent · season
Approach: Check in at park HQ first (grab the climbing-area map + rules), then hike the Summit/Loop trail to the main dome, Little Rock, or the boulder fields — 10–30 min.
🗓️ Season: Year-round EXCEPT public-hunt closures (some fall/winter dates — check TPWD). Spring & fall are prime; summer slab is brutally hot and lightning-exposed.
🎒 Gear & food
Rack: Trad cracks take clean gear only — pitons are banned (cams + nuts). Bolted slab is RUN-OUT ('sporty, not sport') — big falls between anchors. Helmet.

🪧 Land & passes: Enchanted Rock State Natural Area (TPWD). $7/person day-use, and an advance DAY-PASS RESERVATION is required — the park fills and closes its gate at capacity.

- Run-out bolted slab — 'sporty', not sport: long falls between anchors, bring trad judgment
- Lightning — the bare dome is the high point for miles; be off by early afternoon in storm season
- Texas heat — the granite bakes, no shade on the slab
- Gate closes at capacity — reserve a day pass ahead
