Jello Tower — Castle Rock (Tumwater)
🚐 Join the caravan
Jello Tower is REAL — it's in Tumwater Canyon near Leavenworth (not the North Cascades). A granite tower on the Upper Castle section of Castle Rock, a 400-ft monolith above the Wenatchee River that's drawn trad climbers for 50+ years. Routes are short single pitches (75–80 ft) sharing bolted top anchors; classics include the 5.8+ South Face and the 5.11a The Nose (FA Beckey & Wilde 1950). A true crag day — ~2 mi from town, 10–15 min approach — good for a WFH weekday after-work burn, though canyon cell is spotty.
🚗 Getting there & comms
Trailhead: Castle Rock parking pullout, US-2 (N side)
From Leavenworth head W on US-2 ~2 mi into Tumwater Canyon; large dirt pullout on the N (river) side. ~5 min. Signed climber's trail to Logger's Ledge from the lot.
⛽ Last services: Leavenworth, ~2 mi E on Hwy 2 — full services. Wenatchee (~25 mi SE) for hospital/larger needs.
📶 Cell signal: Marginal/spotty — ~2 mi from Leavenworth so a weak signal is often present, but canyon walls block it in spots. Don't rely on a bar; carry inReach if climbing late.
🧗 Routes
🥾 Approach · descent · season
Approach: From the dirt pullout on the N side of US-2 (~2 mi W of Leavenworth), take the signed climber's trail up toward Logger's Ledge and Upper Castle. ~10–15 min uphill. Jello Tower is on Upper Castle; The Nose climbs the SW face; Damnation Crack splits the cleft between Jello Tower and Castle Rock proper.
⬇️ Descent: All Jello Tower routes top out at shared bolted anchors — single-rope rappel/lower (75–80 ft, a 60m easily covers it). For climbs continuing to Castle Rock's summit, follow the climber's trail off the back to Logger's Ledge. Bail low by downclimbing to Logger's Ledge or lowering off gear.
🗓️ Season: Spring + fall ideal — SW aspect bakes in summer; sunny so warm dry windows possible year-round. Summer too hot midday (climb early/late).
🎒 Gear & food
Rack: Standard trad rack to a #2 Camalot; nuts + single small-to-#2 cams; a few alpine draws. Bolted top anchors (bring slings/draws to rig).
Ropes: Single 60m (70m gives margin). No doubles needed on Jello Tower.
