Goat Wall (Valhalla) — Earl Grey
🚐 Join the caravan
Earl Grey is an 8-pitch, ~720 ft fully bolted sport route (5.9, Grade III) on the Valhalla wall in the Goat Wall complex above Mazama, Methow Valley. Classic intuitive Mazama movement, good bolted anchors, no real runouts, crux pitches ~5.9. Roadside-accessible but the length, exposure, and 7-rappel descent make it a committing multi-pitch outing, not a quick crag.
🚗 Getting there & comms
Trailhead: Goat Wall / Fire Wall climber trailhead (Lost River Rd, Mazama)
From the Mazama Store, head NW on Lost River Road (the Goat Wall rises right above the road) to the established climbers' pullout for the Goat Wall crags (Fire Wall / Valhalla). Park well off the road; no roadside camping.
⛽ Last services: Mazama Store (~1–2 mi) — fuel, food, espresso, supplies. Fuller services + gas in Winthrop (~13–15 mi SE).
📶 Cell signal: Spotty to none at the crag and in upper Methow; don't count on a signal on the wall. Carry inReach. The Mazama Store has some wifi.
🧗 Routes
🥾 Approach · descent · season
Approach: From the Goat Wall / Fire Wall trailhead off Lost River Road, hike the climbers' trail toward Fire Wall; ~5 min in, after a small creek crossing, take the RIGHT fork to Valhalla (Fire Wall is left). Continue to the base of the tall metamorphic wall. Steep, brushy.
⬇️ Descent: Rappel the route: 7 rappels with a single 60m rope (all bolted; each rap 30m or less). The rappel line largely follows the route with a noted deviation around P4–P5 — use the correct anchors, don't rap past a station. Bail anywhere via the bolted anchors.
🗓️ Season: Spring–fall (May–Oct); best late spring + fall. Bakes in midsummer afternoon sun; fast-building Methow thunderstorms — climb early. Lichen-prone, greasy when wet (newly developed 2022–2023).
🎒 Gear & food
Rack: ~14 quickdraws (6 sport + 7 single alpine + 1 double-length to cut rope drag on wandering pitches). PAS, rappel-capable belay device, helmet.
Ropes: Single 60m rope (all rappels 30m or less).

⚠️ Hazards · fire · emergency
- Loose/rotten rock on a tall metamorphic wall — helmet essential; watch climber-knocked rockfall on the multi-rap descent
- Fast-building Methow afternoon thunderstorms — exposed wall, lightning, rain makes lichen greasy

- Heat/full sun in midsummer afternoons
- Long committing day, limited bail once high
- Rattlesnakes/ticks on the brushy lower approach
