🚐 Join the caravan

One of the 50 Classic Climbs of North America and widely called the best 5.6 in America — a spectacular, airy traverse along Wolf's Head's serrated east ridge that delivers big-mountain position and exposure far beyond its modest grade.

🥾 Approach · descent · season

Approach: Big Sandy Trailhead → ~9–11 mi (a few thousand ft gain) past Big Sandy Lake and over Jackass Pass into the Cirque, camp near Lonesome/Cirque lakes. To gain the ridge, scramble 4th–low-5th class up the gully between Pingora and Tiger Tower, then make two ~40ft raps onto the start of the east ridge.

⬇️ Descent: From the summit, ~6 fixed/bolted rappel stations head down to the WEST with short exposed scrambling between, then traverse SOUTH into the gully between Wolf's Head and Overhanging Tower and descend back to the Cirque basin. All raps doable with a single 60m rope (two ropes speed a storm bail). The descent is notoriously time-consuming and is the practical crux — budget daylight.

🗓️ Season: Mid-July through mid-September, once the high Winds have melted out and trails/passes are snow-free; go early to beat afternoon thunderstorms.

🎒 Gear & food

Rack: Standard alpine rack: doubles to #2 Camalot, single #3, set of nuts, alpine draws/long slings (extend for the wandering ridge). One 60m rope suffices; doubles help bail faster.
