🔥 Moderate summer wildfire risk in the Royal Gorge/Fremont County foothills. BLM RGFO issues Stage 1–2 fire restrictions in dry summers — check blm.gov/office/royal-gorge-field-office before visit. The pinyon-juniper and dry grass make this area susceptible; a wildfire closed Shelf Road in 2020. Summer (Jun–Sep) is also too hot to climb — fire risk peaks alongside heat. 🔥 Front Range fire risk is elevated in summer, especially in drought years. 2026 is a high-risk year statewide per the Colorado governor. The adjacent foothills east of the park burned in the Marshall Fire (Dec 2021). Afternoon thunderstorms Jul–Aug are the more immediate daily hazard at the crag (never climb wet sandstone). 🔥 RMNP has elevated wildfire risk, especially in dry summers. The Cameron Peak Fire (2020) burned to the edge of Estes Park — one of the largest in CO history. The park is always under at least Stage 1 fire restrictions; campfires prohibited in the backcountry. Summer 2026 is a high-risk year across the Front Range. Routes in Glacier Gorge are not immediately threatened by typical fire starts but smoke events can affect air quality significantly. Monitor InciWeb Colorado and the park's own fire page.

🔥 Wyoming/Wind River Range fire risk is moderate compared to the drier Southwest, but smoke from fires across the West routinely impacts summer visibility and air quality (July–September). The Cirque itself is at high elevation (10–12k ft) and less prone to fire starts than the surrounding lower forest. In 2021 a wildfire impacted access roads west of Pinedale. Check InciWeb Wyoming and NIFC forecasts. Campfires restricted in the wilderness during high fire danger — always use a stove.

🔥 High fire risk in summer — Idaho faces above-normal fire potential through the entire summer of 2026 per state officials. Exotic annual grasses (cheatgrass) in the sagebrush flats around the reserve dramatically increase fire risk and spread. A 1,500-acre fire ignited ~11 mi south of Oakley (near the reserve) in late May 2026. The reserve has active fire management. 🔥 Bitterroot has one of the most dramatic wildfire histories in the US: the 2000 fire season burned ~350,000 acres, destroyed 70 homes, and required evacuation of 900 households. The Blodgett Fire (2000) was human-caused. Fires in the area typically start in July–August from lightning or human causes, with smoke impacts June–September. 2026 is a high fire-risk year in Montana. 🔥 Glacier NP has active wildfire history — the Reynolds Creek Fire has burned in the Reynolds Mountain area in the past. Smoke from fires across western Montana, Idaho, and Canada routinely blankets the park July–September, sometimes significantly degrading air quality and visibility.
